ENGINEERING NOTES / PROTOTYPE SUPPLY
Small quantity semiconductor sourcing for hardware startup prototypes
Define the next build
Start with exact manufacturer part numbers, acceptable packaging, quantities and the required assembly date. Include expected rework and test needs. A precise small-quantity request is easier to assess than an open-ended availability question.
Understand what is being offered
Ask whether stock is physically held or supplier-reported, what traceability is available, and which inspection or testing steps are included. Date code, handling condition and order quantities should be agreed before purchase.
Balance access with qualification
Low minimum quantities can help an early build, but availability is only one criterion. Align source acceptance, inspection and alternative approval with your engineering team. Recheck the supply plan when moving from prototype to pilot.
